About This Class
I studied abroad in Nicaragua during college and had the opportunity to "volcano board!"

Welcome to Olson U! My name is Laura Henry (Ms. Henry), and I have been teaching at Olson since the fall of 2014. I am originally from Louisville, Kentucky and went to Carleton College in Northfield (Minnesota). I teach Individuals and Societies - Year 1, Minnesota Studies.

This year, we have started the year by learning about the 3 branches of government, the 3 levels of government, and the upcoming elections. We will then move on to important geography skills - the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world, the 5 regions of the United States, and parts of a map. Then, we move on to Minnesota history, starting with the native Dakota and Ojibwe people. We learn about the fur trade, settlers, and the U.S.-Dakota War. Every February we also do a unit on Black History Month.

Throughout the year, we keep up with current events through reading news articles and watching "The Week in Rap." Every student has the opportunity to be successful in my class through reading, writing, art, technology, music, and other creative ways of learning.

I am lucky to teach at Olson with so many dedicated and hard-working staff, and I love building relationships with students and families throughout the school year. The best way to reach me is through e-mail - Laura.Henry@mpls.k12.mn.us. You can also call/leave a voicemail for me through the main office - 612-668-1640.
