Dr. Stave Emerson

Welcome to the 2020-21 school year at Olson Middle School, also known as Olson U. We refer to ourselves as Olson U (University) because we focus our efforts on preparing students to become successful high school students and future college graduates. We know this year provides an unusual opportunity to experience learning in new ways as we begin the year in distance learning. Our teachers and our support staff have worked hard to develop engaging lessons and learning activities to challenge our students to be their best selves every day.

In contrast to last spring, this fall students will experience distance learning that closely mirrors face to face learning. Each student will have schedule that includes a 20 minute advisory to start the day and six 55 minute classes. There will be a 30 minute break for lunch and recess time. These grade level schedules are posted on our website.

We have a great school, and I believe that together we can continue to improve the quality of our school community. Since 2018, we have partnered with the Phillips Foundation to facilitate personalized learning for all of our students, known as the My Story My Brilliance project. In the fall of 2019, Olson was authorized as an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme school. In addition, Olson has been recognized by the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) as a Star of Innovation school three times in the last four years.

Our teachers and staff members are excited about leading students to be academically, socially and emotionally successful. We are committed to building a learning community with students and families at the center. We know this commitment will lead to outstanding results for our students.

Please know that we want to ensure communication is timely and relevant. Our website will be our central vehicle for communication. Please check the website daily, particularly while we are in distance learning.

I look forward to working together in partnership with you to maximize the brilliance in all of our students.
