I studied abroad in Nicaragua during college and had the opportunity to "volcano board!"

Welcome to Olson U! My name is Laura Henry (Ms. Henry), and this is my 3rd year teaching 6th grade Minnesota Studies.

In this class, we start the year by learning important geography - the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world, and the 5 regions of the United States. Then, we move on to Minnesota history, starting with the native Dakota and Ojibwe people. We learn about the fur trade, settlers, the Civil War, the U.S.-Dakota War, and Minnesota's 3 main industries of the past - flour, lumber, and iron. In the spring, we take a field trip to Biztown and spend 3 weeks learning all about the economy, money, and jobs!

Throughout the year, we keep up with current events through reading news articles and watching "The Week in Rap" every Friday. Every student has the opportunity to be successful in my class through reading, writing, art, technology, music, and other creative ways of learning.

I am lucky to teach at Olson with so many dedicated and hard-working staff, and I love building relationships with students and families throughout the school year. The best way to reach me is through e-mail - Laura.Henry@mpls.k12.mn.us. You can also call/leave a voicemail for me through the main office - 612-668-1640.
