My name is Simone Skraba and this is my second year at Olson Middle School. This is my 4th year teaching in Minneapolis Public Schools. Before I came to Olson I was at Lucy Laney and Keewaydin.

In U.S. Studies this year, 7th graders will be studying the history of our country beginning around the year 1800 and moving to the present. We do an exciting project called National History Day. This is a competition that reaches the national level and Minneapolis Public Schools sends many students to Washington, D.C. every year to compete! I am confident we will create some

historians out of our 7th graders this year! More to come on NHD at the end of October.

We will focus a lot on reading this year at Olson. Each day during our Explore 1 classes we take 15-20 minutes to do "I'M GREATT" (I'M Gaining Reading Expertise All The Time). Students pick a book to read and stick to it from start to finish.

We are also focusing on "Changing Your Mindset" at Olson this year! Educating our students on transitioning from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and what that might look like. We want our students committed to growing their brains on a daily basis!

I am a native of Minneapolis and I love everything the city has to offer! When I'm not at school I enjoy spending time with my fiancé, Ryan (and planning our wedding!); our 2-year-old dog, Leo; traveling whenever possible; trying new restaurants in the Twin Cities; and working on our 1920s home in North Minneapolis. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth in Environmental Studies & Geography. My Master of Arts in Education is nearing completion (May 2017) at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
