Hello Olson Families and Students!
My name is Kate Andrews van Horne, the kids call me “Ms. AvH” for short. This will be my 6th year at Olson MS and my 22nd year of teaching overall. I am an MPS kid – I attended Kenwood, Anwatin and Southwest, and then graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in History and Education. I taught at Evanston Township High School before coming back home! I was fortunate enough to have taught at Anwatin for 12 years and also to have done some district-level social studies work before landing here at Olson. While at Olson I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade social studies classes.
I am very excited to begin a new role at Olson this year, that of IB MYP Coordinator. This means I will support teachers, students, and families as we all learn about and implement our IB Middle Years Program together (see the IB page for more info on that).
I am also excited to teach one section of a 6th grade Explore class. Focused on Social justice and Equity, this class will integrate elements of the IB Design Cycle with components of Community Service/Service Learning.
In my free time I am trying to finish up a doctoral program at the U of M – my goal is to finish by the end of next summer! I am deeply driven to address issues of Equity and Social Justice in our schools. As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” May it be so.
When I’m not doing education-related things, I am typically doing family-related things. My wife Jen and I are lucky enough to be surrounded by our siblings and their kids, in addition to our “Kid” LaTreasure, and our dog, Ellie. We love to travel (yay for national parks!), read, hike/bike, and support the diverse cultural communities of the Twin Cities.
