Expanding Vocabulary

Lots of reading: One of the best ways for students to build vocabulary is through a lot of independent reading.  Olson student read for 20 minutes each day during IMGREAT2 time.   In addition, all Olson students are expected to read for 20 minutes each evening.  Support your student's at home reading success by providing a quiet space for students to read at home.  Also, talk with them about what they are reading and even have them read to you or a sibling.

Words in Context: At Olson, students receive instruction in how to find the meaning of unfamiliar words by using the context in which the word appears to give clues as to the words meaning.

Word of the day: Each day the entire Olson community focuses on 1 new vocabulary word.  Students are taught the new word and all students and staff are expected to use the word as many times as possible during the day.  Research has shown that it can take between 7 and 40 exposures to new words before students internalize the word to the point they can use it successfully. Ask students about the word of the day and help them to learn it by making it part of their at-home vocabulary too.
